Top Spin Table Tennis Academy is a brain child of Mr.Shanker. The creation of the table tennis academy goes like this. He was compelled to learn table tennis by his parents at the age of 10 years. He was recognized by Central Bank of India Staff Sports and Recreation club. This made him to have passion on Table Tennis and hence became a motive to start a Table Tennis Academy. Efforts of Mr Hari and Mr.Boopathi brothers of Mr.Shanker in stabilizing and developing the academy are immeasurable.The strength of the academy is its members. The age of members of academics varies from 6 to 60 with differences in religion, language, culture, status and these things never been a hindrance in uniting all members together. Jaiwanth son of Mr.Shanker has always been a driving force of the academy. Coaches Mr.P.V.Ramakrishnan and Mr.A.Devaraj who have been playing key role in molding the students in molding the students in achieving laurels in various competitions. The academy’s visiting card is affiliation to Madras District Table Tennis Association, which helps in the reputation of the academy. Owners, Coaches and players of various academies in Chennai have been a great support in development of our academy .Media has been of great support in promoting table tennis in publishing various events and results performed by our academy from time to time. Just dial services have been an important reason for enrolling new members and to reach players of various parts of the city. Mr.Shanker has been playing table tennis for the past 46 years, though in a semi-professional way. Right from the initial stages, although his goal was to compete and win matches, there was always an urge in him to spread this game to as many as he could in whatever possible manner. While working in Central Bank of India besides playing large number of tournaments he always kept looking for colleagues who were interested in table tennis and taught them the basics of table tennis. In fact at one point of time he was given an award by Central Bank of India employees for “promoting table tennis in Central Bank of India which is the best award. On taking up my voluntary retirement from bank at age of 44, he thought he could spend more time on table tennis and planned to start a Table Tennis Center on my own. When he was planning to keep a name for my center, my son came with a wonderful idea stating that any particular stroke in the game, like topspin or rally etc., would be precise and thus the name Topspin Table Tennis Center was confirmed for the Center. Initially, the center was at Madipakkam, started in 2005 with 5 students of Sai Matriculation School and Prince Matriculation School, which very soon expanded with nearly 30 children. It had 3 table tennis tables and took a hall on rent of Rs.4000/- per month. Subsequently, in 2008 I shifted to Purasawalkam from Madipakkam and could not continue the Table Tennis Center at Madipakkam. This new, spacious Center at Purasawalkam was started in 2008 once again with 3 tables and 5 children. With the able support of Just Dial services, the center with was developed with more members and more TT tables. The chief coach, Mr. P.V. Ramakrishnan had been of great moral support. On his recommendation the academy got another wonderful coach Mr. A. Devaraj. Under these two coaches besides Mr.Shanker the players have developed a lot in this game of table tennis. By this time the strength of our Table Tennis Center grew to nearly 40 members and 6 tables. We approached Madras Table Tennis Association for affiliation of our Center. Mr. Dilip sir, the treasurer and Mr. J. Selvakumar sir, secretary of Madras District Table Tennis Association inspected our place and affiliation was granted in 2011.From then we were full of programs. We have so far conducted nearly 9 open tournaments for non rankers. Our members both children and elders started participating in lots of school tournaments, state ranking tournaments, district tournaments, and corporate tournaments and achieved lots of prizes and thereby earned very good name fo
